A DERROCADA DA CIVILIZAÇÃO OCIDENTAL E A CONFERÊNCIA SOBRE O CLIMA EM PARIS.

Estão tendo lugar ,nesse momento ,as reuniões preparatórias da próxima Conferência de Paris sobre o Clima- a COP 21,que reunirá cerca de 190 países para debruçar-se sobre as mudanças climáticas e sobre o que poderá acontecer ao Planeta Terra ,e seus habitantes, uma ameaça que se aproxima e cujos contornos e consequências a cada dia se tornam mais graves, à medida que avançam os estudos e chegam a conclusões quase unânimes Institutos e cientistas respeitáveis, de todo mundo.

Espera-se dessa Conferência que tais estudos encontrem ali ressonância, e que dos debates surja um novo Acordo, capaz de ir além do Acordo de Kioto, afastando essa ameaça que já não é uma ameaça de ambientalistas sonhadores, mas um fato real que se confirma a cada dia, não só através dos referidos estudos, mas pelo que vem acontecendo na Terra, a poluição e os buracos de ozônio que crescem, a diminuição das águas, o degelo das regiões polares, o aumento da temperatura e dos desastres naturais, como cheias devastadoras em várias partes do mundo, secas prolongadas e desertificação, enfim…aí estão dezenas de sinais, não apenas visíveis para quem não for cego ao que está acontecendo, mas apontados nas mais respeitáveis pesquisas de órgãos ambientais e de monitoramento climático. O que está acontecendo?
Coincidentemente, minha prima lá de Vitório Vêneto, na Itália, a Eliana Della Giustina, presenteou-me um livro-que ainda não se encontra traduzido em nossas livrarias-Il CROLO DELLA CIVILTÁ OCCIDENTALE-livremente traduzido- A DERROCADA DA CIVILIZAÇÃO OCIDENTAL-ou para usar o termo e o alerta frequente em nossas redes sociais, em torno da proposta por uma civilização participativa e solidária,- A RUPTURA DA CIVILIZAÇÃO.
O livro tem como autores dois respeitáveis cientistas: a Professora Naomi Oreskes, que pesquisa e leciona na Universidade de Harvard a disciplina História da Ciência e Ciências Planetárias e o historiador e engenheiro ERIK M. Conwey, que trabalha na NASA.
Para expressar seu alerta sobre as mudanças climáticas e suas consequências, os dois autores se colocam como sendo historiadores pelo ano de 2300, fazendo uma análise sobre o que aconteceu no Planeta 200 anos antes, ou seja, pelo fim do Século XX e durante o Século XXI, ou seja, nesse tempo que estamos vivendo.
Diante das consequências das mudanças climáticas já acontecidas nesse período, a questão que os futuros historiadores cientistas se colocam ,ou nos colocam, é a seguinte:

“Se os Chefes de Estado da época, os Cientistas, os Empresários, as Organizações nacionais e internacionais sabiam o que estava acontecendo, sabiam as consequências do que estava acontecendo e sabiam o que devia ser feito para evitar que acontecesse, porque nada fizeram para evitar que tudo acontecesse?”.
Quero dizer que esta é um pergunta terrível que é feita, ou que será feita pela história no futuro, à nossa geração, aos governantes, aos cientistas, às universidades, aos órgãos internacionais, enfim à toda a sociedade do nosso tempo, pergunta cuja resposta só pode ser a condenação pela inércia ,pelo comodismo, pela prevalência do jogo dos interesses individuais, dos interesses corporativos, não só dos grandes e dos poderosos, mas de cada um de acordo com suas possibilidades, em fazer alguma coisa para que a ruptura, a tragédia anunciada fosse evitada.
Qual a tragédia ou a ruptura acontecida, segundo os autores de “A DERROCADA DA CIVILIZAÇÃO OCIDENTAL, ou qual a tragédia ,ou a ruptura que nos espera nos próximos anos caindo sobre nossa idade madura, sobre nossa velhice, ou sobre a geração de nossos filhos e netos, se não formos capazes de reverter essa tendência suicida?
Pela especialidade de seus autores o livro se concentra nos efeitos climáticos, na mudança dos regimes dos mares, das águas, da superfície da terra, do ar e de outros aspectos físicos, mas voltam-se também para as consequências humanas, sociais e individuais da catástrofe, pois suas consequências, da perspectiva dos historiadores do futuro atingiram, ou na nossa perspectiva, atingirão a própria civilização.
Parece-me desnecessário registrar, a coincidência dessas análises com as analises repetidas em nossas reflexões referentes às propostas por uma civilização participativa e solidaria , as ameaças de ruptura que pairam sobre a civilização e da urgência de uma transformação de dimensão civilizatória, global e não apenas de dimensão física, ou climática, ou de qualquer outra dimensão apenas setorial.
Não. Não estamos sós, por mais que tantos, as universidades e tantas outras organizações sociais, que poderiam fazer alguma coisa, ou fazer muito, cada uma de acordo com sua dimensão, repito, não ouçam os clamores do mundo, ou não os entendam, ou os ouvindo e entendendo não se movem, ausentes ou absorvidas pela mediocridade de só ver o dia a dia.

O livro narra que nesses períodos, fins do século XX e até meados do século XXI, em consequência do efeito estufa, o clima do Planeta aumentara muito mais dos que os 2 ou 3 graus já denunciados pelos cientistas, chegando a 5 graus num primeiro momento – lá por 2060 e ultrapassando os 8 graus, em seguida, o que provocou a derrocada das calotas polares causando, entre outros efeitos, a elevação dos mares submergindo todas as áreas que se situavam abaixo dessa nova altitude, enquanto enormes áreas dos vários continentes se tornaram desertas, diminuindo significativamente a produção de alimentos e fazendo crescer tragicamente a fome no mundo.
Os mapas mostram que ficaram submersas quase todas as áreas que formavam os chamados Países Baixos na Europa, o que era a Holanda, parte da Bélgica e da Dinamarca, praticamente todo o território de Bangladesh e parcelas dos países do sudeste asiático, parte do vale do Mississipi, quase toda a península da Flórida, áreas ribeirinhas da Amazônia, a Ilha Manhatan, onde se situava Nova York, reduzida a um pequeno quadrilátero central.
Mais de 1 bilhão de pessoas tiveram que ser deslocadas, não só dessas regiões mas de todas as áreas litorâneas. As condições de sanitárias, as condições climáticas completamente modificadas, causaram a morte, o desaparecimento de mais da metade das espécies animais e vegetais. Novas doenças apareceram em consequência dessas mudanças, dizimando metade da espécie humana, repetindo, de outra forma, o que acontecera na Idade Média, quando a peste negra matara metade da população então existente. Agora, como naquela época, os cientistas temeram pela extinção da espécie humana.
Alguns tem me perguntado como seria a ruptura a que me refiro frequentemente em meus livros, como uma ameaça que paira sobre a civilização. Respondo sempre que não sei, que não sou profeta nem adivinho, mas os cientistas-historiadores, a partir de dados de sua especialidade, colocando-se ficcionalmente após a ruptura, descrevem que pode ser assim.
A reversão dessa derrocada, segundo eles, veio a partir da virada do século 21, com a descoberta de alternativas tecnológicas para reverter o processo. Talvez seja possível, mas a humanidade terá pago o preço que descreveram e a que me refiro também em nossas reflexões….
Enfim quero lembrar que isto tudo não foi escrito por nenhum ambientalista romântico, também por nenhum romancista de ficção, mas por dois cientistas, uma professora da Universidade de Harvard em parceria com um engenheiro da NASA ,ambos dedicados aos estudos referentes às questões ambientais, em mais um alerta para a humanidade.

Devo acrescentar que nessa semana passada, ainda a ONU divulgou um novo RELATÓRIO REFERENTE ÀS MUDANÇAS CLIMÁTICAS ALERTANDO QUE, AINDA QUE os Chefes de Estado adotassem as medidas em debate voltadas à diminuição do efeito estufa, ainda assim, elas não seriam suficientes para afastar a ameaça do aquecimento global com todas as suas consequências.
Também esse documento, não foi subscrito por nenhum ambientalista romântico ou por nenhum romancista de ficção científica, mas deve pairar no ar, para minha reflexão, para sua reflexão, meu querido amigo minha querida amiga, para reflexão dos líderes mundiais reunidos na COB 21, em Paris, e de todos aqueles que detêm parcela, não importa se mínima ou máxima, sobre o futuro do PLANETA, NOSSA CASA COMUM, A PERGUNTA DOS AUTORES DO LIVRO: A Derrocada da Civilização Ocidental;

THE DOWNFALL OF THE OCCIDENTAL CIVILIZATION AND THE CONFERENCE ABOUT THE CLIMATE IN PARIS.

There’re having places, at this moment, the preparatory meetings of the next Conference of Paris about the climate – The COP 21 which will gather around 190 countries to look into climate changes and about what will happen in Planet Earth and its habitants, a threat that comes up and whose shapes and consequences each day become more severe, as far as the studies advance and come to conclusions almost unanimous respectable Institutes and scientists of the whole world.
It’s expected from this Conference that such studies find there resonance and that from the debates arise a new Agreement, capable to go beyond the Kyoto Agreement, moving away that threat which it’s already not a threat of environmentalists dreamers, but a real fact that confirms itself each day, not only through of those studies, but from what it’s been happening on Earth, the pollution and the ozone holes that grow, the reduction of water, the melting of polar regions, the increase in temperature and of natural disasters as devastating floods in several parts of the world, prolonged droughts and desertification and ultimately….There’re
dozen of sights, not only visible to anyone who is not blind to what is happening, but it’s pointed in the most respectable researches of environmental agencies and of climate monitoring. What is going on?
Coincidentally, my cousin from Vittorio Veneto, in Italy, Eliana Della Giustina, has gifted me a book – which it isn’t translated in portuguese in our bookstores – CROLO DELLA CIVILTÁ OCCIDENTALE – freely translated – THE DOWNFALL OF THE WESTERN CIVILIZATION – or to use the term and the frequent alert in our social media around the proposal for a participating and solidary civilization, – THE BREAK OF THE CIVILIZATION.
The book has as its authors two respectable scientists: the female professor Naomi Oreskes that researches and teaches at Harvard University the discipline History of Science and Planetary Sciences and the historian and engineer Erik M. Conwey that works at NASA.
To express their warming about climate changes and its consequences, both authors place themselfes as historians in the year 2300, making an analysis of what happened on the Planet 200 years ago, in other words, by the end of the twentieth century and during the 21 century, so in the season that we’re living.
In face of consequences of climate changes already happened in this period, the question that the future historians scientists put for themselves, or put for us is this:
“If the Heads of the State of the Season, the Scientists, Businessmen, the national and international organisms knew what was happening, knew what would come and knew what should be done so that did not happen, why did they nothing do to prevent what happened?”
I mean that this is a terrible question that it’s asked, or that it’ll be by the history in the future, to our generation, to the rulers, scientists, universities, international organizations, in the end to the whole society of our season, question which answer only can be the conviction by the inertia, self-indulgence, the prevalence of the game of individual interests, corporate interests, not only from the big and powerful ones, but to each one according to your possibility, to do something so that the break, the announced tragedy was avoided.
What is the tragedy or the break happened, second to authors of “THE DOWNFALL OF THE WESTERN CIVILIZATION”, or what is the tragedy, or the break that wait for us in next years falling over our mature age, falling over our oldness, or over the generation of four children and grandchildren if we’re not capable to revert this suicidal tendency?
By the specialty of the authors the book concentrates on climate effects, on change of regimes of the sea, the waters, the earth’s surface, air and other physical aspects, but they also turn themselves to the human, social and individual consequences of catastrophe because its consequences, from the perspective of future historians, or in our view, will reach civilization itself.
It sounds unnecessary to me to record, the coincidence of these analysis with the repeated analyses in our reflections related to the proposal for a participating and solidary civilization, the threats of rupture which hover over the civilization and the urgency of a transformation of civilizational dimension, global and not just physical dimension, or climate dimension, or other just sectoral dimension.
No. We’re not alone, no matter how many, the universities and so many other social organizations that could do something, or do a lot, each one according to its dimension, I repeat, do not listen the world’s clamors, or do not understand them, or listening to them and understanding them do not move, absents and absorbed by mediocrity of only see the day to day.
The book narrates that in these periods, the late twentieth century and until the mid-twenty-first century, in consequence of the greenhouse effect, the climate on Planet will increase much more than 2 or 3 degrees already denounced by scientists, reaching 5 degrees at first – around 2060 and surpassing 8 degrees, then, what provoked the downfall of the ice caps causing, among other things, the rising seas submerging all areas that were bellow of this new high, while large areas of several continents have become deserted, significantly decreasing food production and making tragically growing world hunger.
The maps show that were undersea almost the whole area that used to form the called Netherlands in Europe, what was Holland, part of Belgium and Denmark, practically all the territory of Bangladesh and portion of the Southeast Asian countries, part of the Mississippi Valley, almost the entire peninsula of Florida, riverine areas of the Amazon, the Manhattan Island, where stood New York, reduced to a small central quadrilateral.
More than 1 billion of people had to be displaced, not only of these regions, but from all the coastal areas. The sanitary conditions, climate conditions completely modified, caused death, disappearance of more than half of the animal and vegetable species. New diseases appeared in consequence of these changes, decimating half of the human species, repeating, in other way, what have happened in the Middle Ages, when the Black Death killed half of the population then existing. Now, as back then, the scientists feared the extinction of the human species.
Some have been asking me how it would be the break which I refer frequently in my book, as a threat that hover over the civilization. I answer always that I don’t know, that I’m not a prophet or seer, but the scientists-historians, from data of their specialty, putting up fictionally after the break, describe what can be.
The reversion of this downfall, second them, it came from the turn of the 21 century with the discovery of technological alternatives to revert the process. Perhaps be possible, but the humanity will be paid the price described and to which I refer in our reflections…
In the end I want to remember that all of this wasn’t written by none romantic environmentalist, also by none novelist of fiction, but by two scientists, a female professor of Harvard University in partnership with an engineer of NASA, both dedicated to the studies related to environmental questions, in one more alert to humanity.
I should add that last week still UN released a new REPORT RELATED TO CLIMATE CHANGES ALLERTING THAT EVEN IF the Heads of State adopted the measures in debate aimed at reduction of greenhouse effect; even so, they wouldn’t be enough to remove the threat of the global warming with all its consequences.
Also this document, it wasn’t subscribed by none romantic environmentalist or by none novelist of science fiction, but it must hang in the air, to my reflection, to your reflection, my dear friend, to reflection of world leaders gathered at COB 21, in Paris, and to reflection of all those who hold share, it doesn’t matter whether minimum or maximum, about the future of the PLANET, OUR COMMON HOUSE, THE QUESTION OF THE AUTHORS OF THE BOOK: The Downfall of the Western Civilization.
